Some have said that in our case the sequel was better than the original. The Pirate Bike Olympics made a great follow up to last year's Triathlon. Not only were we super organized but everyone walked away with a little something and more importantly everyone left in ONE piece- no injuries this year! About 65 people registered in 15 teams at the starting point on Flagstaff Hill. Even more families and friends showed up at the end to show moral support—and eat all the tasty food donated by our friends at Allegro Hearth, Dozen Cupcakes, and Whole Foods.

The race started with the 2-Headed Giant segment, where one person from each team was paired up with someone from another team and tied together by their legs. They had to run and tag their teams in before untying and getting their bikes. From there each team had 3 checkpoints to hit: one in the strip district to pick up their stash of water balloons, one downtown to test their pirate trivia, and last but not least the rope swing under the 31st st. bridge where bonus points could be earned with a quick dip in the river. The NEW Polish Hill Stranglers took this first section by storm, arriving team intact long before any one else. Everyone else did manage to get there in a timely fashion, and then we were able to get the real games started.

Youngest competitor

Our Steeplechase course was no joke with sharks, piranhas, and baby ducks- but everyone managed to race the four laps in crazy fast time. We saw the Northshore River Rats take first place and the nest two or three people were followed by a pack. Without our instant replay in effect, we had to divy up points to everyone evenly.... it was a tough call.

Next on our list was the Modern Pentathlon which began with a hearty game of hook hand/eye patch water balloon toss. pairs from each team lined up across from each other, one wearing an eye patch and the other a hook hand. most teams made it along surprisingly far, but it came down to the Thick Dorc team and the New Polish Hill Stranglers. Larry's magic juggling skills allowed team Thick to keep their balloon intact for at least 23 seconds longer granting them first place status.

Sledge pull action shot

Shot put was won by the Skinny Skeletal Scallywags, followed by the Northshore River Rats showing off their fancy footwork again in the Peg Leg Race. The Peg Leg bike race was won by the New Polish Hill's Tim Z- arguably the fastest one legged biker in the burgh- and on a brakeless fixie no less. And concluding the pentathlon was the Sledge Pull, where teams had to pull one player across a fixed distance. The Skinny Skeletal Scallywags managed to pull the hardest though they were followed quickly by Bring the Sketchiness, Polish Hill, Ghost Pirates and Team Nick!

For the Foot Down (sometimes referred to fondly as "death circle"), teams could play as many members as they liked. Despite attempts to ignore our no intentional contact rule, most people managed to escape unscathed. as it got down to the last handful of people we noticed Brad Q. vying for a spot, despite the fact that he was being the photographer and not racing. But the ladies repped it till the end with Courtney of her own team and Claire of Retired Models Space Pussy, followed by the gents of Northshore River Rats and Freeze thaw. Thick Dorc managed to take first and second place which in the end guaranteed them the glory!!

Retired Model Space Pussy comes out of retirement.

Our last event was the bike Biathlon, which despite technical difficulties with the stop watch managed to be pretty successful. We had folks riding in circles throwing water balloons at targets and doing tons of push ups, because most people just missed a lot. As a last minute bonus point opportunity, our Volunteer judges came together to hand out a few extra StylePoints. This was probably the highlight for most of our spectators with the muscles and sexy poses and all.

We managed to have all the prizes out by 5 pm, so that everyone could go eat pizza. My dear Team Yeti (fambly!) scored DFL, and we had tons of prizes for every team. Thick Dorc took home first place, Northshore River Rats got second, and Freeze Thaw Cycles got third. Thanks to all the sponsors who donated these Pirates' booty and the folks who came out to rais funds for the Womens Center and Shelter of Greater Pittsburgh.

Team Thick Dorc are #1! (And casey
        snuck in there somehow)
